SALLA TYKKÄ (b. 1973, Helsinki) is an artist, filmmaker and photographer who addresses issues of gaze, power, gender, control and memory. Her body of work within the moving image applies the narrative means of both fiction and documentary film. Salla Tykkä (b. 1973) lives and works in Helsinki. She has held several solo exhibitions, most recently at Wäinö Aaltonen Museum, Turku; Ludwig Museum, Budapest; M – Museum, Leuven; and Turku Art Museum. Bio
SALLA TYKKÄ (b. 1973, Helsinki) is an artist, filmmaker and photographer who addresses issues of power, control and memory. Her body of work within the moving image applies the narrative means of both fiction and documentary film.
By alternating both distancing and immersive elements of imagery and sound, Tykkä succeeds in entwining collective and personal dimensions in her works, which are characterized by powerful visual narrative and a strong balance of form and content. Self-portraits are a thematic continuum in her photographic works – exploring her own personal history and identity has been central to her films and photography since the 1990s.
Salla Tykkä’s pieces apply the means of documentary film narrative, but with a central role given to spoken language, bringing the works closer to her own experiences. This particularly concerns the ways in which things are said. By alternating distancing and immersive elements of imagery and sound, Tykkä succeeds in entwining the collective and personal dimensions of her multi-layered themes.
