INKA BELL is a Helsinki-based visual artist who works within the expanded field of printmaking, exploring printed images, paper sculptures, and public art. In Bell’s practice, paper plays a central role — as a material for printing or for shaping into new forms. Through materials, colour, form, and repetition, her works explore the relationship between the two- and three-dimensional. Even with their echoes of minimalism and concretism, her works are nevertheless unmistakably, playfully, insightfully, always Bell’s own. Bell’s works embody subtle moments of transition and transformation, where movement emerges through variations in material and instrumental elements, and invite viewers to observe the changes occurring within them and their relationship to the surrounding space.

Inka Bell (b. 1981, Espoo) lives and works in Helsinki. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Printmaking Department of the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2021. Bell has exhibited extensively in Finland and abroad, including at Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki; Turku Art Museum; Bricks Gallery, Copenhagen; Backlash Gallery, Paris; EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art; Forum Box, Helsinki; and HAM Helsinki Art Museum Gallery. Her work is represented in public collections in the United States, Denmark, Belgium, and Finland, including Turku Art Museum, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, EMMA Espoo museum of Modern Art, and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. She has created several commissioned public works in Finland. In 2024, Bell received the William Thuring Grand Prize awarded by the Finnish Art Society.

Bio

Inka Bell is a Helsinki-based visual artist who works within the expanded field of printmaking, exploring printed images, paper sculptures, and public art. Her interests lie in visual phenomena and the limitless possibilities of constructing image surfaces. Bell, who often works in series, brings echoes of Minimalism, Concretism and Kinetic art into her pieces. Through materials, colour, form, and repetition, her works explore the relationship between the two- and three-dimensional. Bell’s colour choices, and the visual observations born with in her works resist verbalisation and external interpretation.

In Bell’s practice, paper plays a central role — as a material for printing or for shaping into new forms. A longstanding aspect of her process is the dialogue and playful experimentation with the materials and techniques used to create images. This interplay sometimes appears as disruptions—or “glitches”—on the image surface, as printing ink and paper begin to blend. Meanwhile, the process of making Bell’s paper sculptures is faintly reminiscent of weaving: two surfaces meet, but the artwork only becomes fully visible through the accumulation of several hundreds or even tens of thousands of repetitions and overlapping elements. Bell continually seeks new ways to merge analogue printmaking with newer techniques of mark- and image-making.

Bell’s works embody subtle moments of transition and transformation, where movement emerges through variations in material and instrumental elements. Her pieces invite viewers to observe the changes occurring within them and their relationship to the surrounding space. They create dimensions where precisely defined information blurs into the uncontrollable, morphing into new frequencies.
